Scooby-Doo is a long-running American animated series produced for Saturday morning television in several different versions from 1969 to the present. Although the format of the show and the cast (and ages) of characters have varied significantly over the years, the most familiar versions of the show feature a talking dog named Scooby Dooby Doo and four teenagers or young adults: Fred "Freddie" Jones, Daphne Blake, Velma Dinkley, and Norville "Shaggy" Rogers.

These five characters drive around in the Mystery Machine van, solving mysteries by exposing seemingly otherworldly ghosts and monsters as flesh and blood crooks. Later versions of Scooby-Doo featured different variations on the show's supernatural theme, and include characters such as Scooby's cousin Scooby-Dum and nephew Scrappy-Doo in addition to or instead of some of the original characters.



Scooby-Doo Goes Hollywood (1979)




A musical-based parody of both the by-then infamous Scooby-Doo formula and of Hollywood in general, the storyline centered on Shaggy convincing Scooby that both of them deserve better than being stars in what he considers a low-class Saturday morning show, and attempts to pitch a number of potential prime-time shows to network executive "C.J." (voiced by Rip Taylor), all of which are parodies of then-popular TV shows and movies such as Superman, Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley, The Sound of Music, and Charlie's Angels. Caught in the middle of this entire ordeal are Fred, Daphne, Velma, and also Scooby's loyal Saturday morning fan base; all of whom convince Scooby to come back to his Saturday morning TV show.

Scooby-Doo In Arabian Nights (1994)




Scooby and Shaggy are hired as royal food-tasters by a young Arab Caliph - a job offer they can't refuse. Scooby-Doo's Original Mysteries (1969)




"Well, gang, it looks like we're up to our armor plates in another mystery." Oddly enough, this line comes from the very first episode of Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?, the part-mystery, part-haunted house animated series that premiered in 1969. The first five episodes are featured on Scooby-Doo's Original Mysteries, in which Freddy, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy, and of course the practical-joking Great Dane Scooby-Doo drive around the country in their lime-green van "The Mystery Machine" investigating haunted castles, ghost towns, and a host of alleged otherworldly beings. Ventriloquist, gymnast, and resident hippie Shaggy and fraidy-cat canine Scooby provide the comic relief between clues, and can usually be bribed into anything with a yummy Scooby snack (the ingredients of which remain the show's real mystery). Sure, the animation is flat, the music receptive, and the jokes not nearly as funny as the laugh track would have you think, but that's par for Saturday morning animation. If you grew up with Scooby and the gang, these original episodes are like a nostalgia train to Saturday morning yesteryear, yet after 30 years the shows have hardly aged (even beatnik Shaggy could pass for modern grunge). The DVD also features an abbreviated music video (not as good as Matthew Sweet's rendition of the theme song on Saturday Morning Cartoons) and a trivia quiz. Recipe For Disaster (2002)




Shaggy and Scooby-Doo's wildest dreams come true when they win a tour of Munchville, home of the Scooby Snax factory. Enter a slimy sludge-monster made out of Scooby Snax dough and it spells out a Recipe for Disaster. The gang tries to cool off at a medieval Scottish castle, but where there's a Large Dragon at Large, there's fire. In Uncle Scooby and Antarctica, Scooby-Doo and the gang try to return Pete the Penguin to his South Pole home, but first they must unravel the bone-chilling riddle of the Finned Fiend. Then, Scooby-Doo and good buddy Shooby-Doo solve the mystery of the flying Wakoomee Beast, in New Mexico, Old Monster. Finally, they're off to Greece, where Shaggy's neck medallion becomes the Centaur of attention in It's All Greek to Scooby.
